Ports directory · sources

Sources, licences and the open database

Every value in the directory carries its source, its licence and when it was last checked. This is where each comes from and how we meet each licence.

Sample data — verified values load from the UN/LOCODE, World Port Index and OpenStreetMap pipeline. Port names and UN/LOCODEs are real; coordinates are approximate; depths, lengths, hours and rates are illustrative. This page is not indexed until verified data loads. Sources and licences · Map and berth data © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL.

UNECE (UN/CEFACT)

UN/LOCODE

Open; free to reuse with attribution to UNECE

We use: Location codes, names, country, function codes, approximate coordinates.

How we comply: Attribute UNECE on every page that shows a code; keep the release (e.g. 2025-2) on each field.

UN/LOCODE

US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency

World Port Index (NGA Pub. 150)

US Government work; public domain in the US

We use: Coordinates, harbour size and type, maximum vessel size, channel, anchorage and pier depths, tide, pilotage, tugs, services.

How we comply: Credit NGA as the source; never imply NGA endorsement; keep the edition on each field.

World Port Index (NGA Pub. 150)

OpenStreetMap contributors

OpenStreetMap

Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0

We use: Terminal and berth outlines and names, seamarks, harbour features.

How we comply: Attribution line on every page and map that uses OSM-derived values; the derived directory database is offered under ODbL (share-alike); OSM-derived fields are kept in their own tables so the offer covers them without other sources.

OpenStreetMap

National and local port authorities

Port authority open data

Per authority; used only where its terms permit reuse

We use: Terminals, berths, operators, notices, tariffs.

How we comply: A terms review is recorded per authority before its first ingest; fields carry the authority's required credit.

Paris MoU, Tokyo MoU, Indian Ocean MoU, US Coast Guard

Port State Control statistics

Public reports and data, reused with attribution

We use: Inspections, detentions, deficiency areas by regime and year.

How we comply: Aggregates only, with the report year and the regime named; no ship-level detention list is republished.

Port State Control statistics

AIS, terminal schedule, weather and tide providers

Licensed feeds (connectors)

Commercial licence per provider, through a connector

We use: Waiting times and congestion, schedules, weather, tide.

How we comply: Shown only to a workspace that holds the licence; never copied into public pages or the open database.

OpenStreetMap

Attribution and share-alike (ODbL 1.0)

  • Every page and map that shows an OpenStreetMap-derived value carries the line “© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL”, linked to the OSM copyright page.
  • The directory database derived from OSM (terminal and berth names and outlines) is offered to anyone under the ODbL, as a download from this page once verified data loads.
  • OSM-derived fields sit in their own tables, so the share-alike offer covers them without pulling in other sources.
  • Pages and maps we produce from the database are a Produced Work: attributed, not relicensed.
  • Nothing is scraped against any site's terms; licensed feeds stay inside the workspaces that hold the licence.

Listings

How agent and supplier listings work

  • Opt-in only: a company appears when it claims its listing, never from scraped directories.
  • Verified before it shows: a code to an address on the company's domain, and a person checks the public company register.
  • Ranking is never for sale; ships' and customers' data is never shared with a listed company.
  • A listing can be edited or removed by the company at any time.
